Moyneyana Movers…walk around Victoria
Residents of Moyneyana House, a low level aged care residential facility in Port Fairy, have managed to around Victoria – figuratively.
Their steps were totalled over five months on walks around and outside the facility.
The residents’ steps – some clocked 10 to 15 kilometres a week – counted as walks from nominated town to to town to make their way around the state.
As they mapped their “journeys” they reminisced about where they were born, had families and holidays or recalled fond memories of the areas.
The project promoted social inclusion within the facility, encouraged physical activity and improved confidence in walking.
Residents’ evaluations showed the most enjoyable part of the project was “mixing with others”.
Some residents increased their walking distances greatly and some enjoyed watching the journey on the map.
This was a worthwhile project that could be adapted to any adult activity group or residential facility. Maybe a “Walk around the World” will be next.
