Nursecall Replacement gets Underway

Wannon Communications Staff run new cables for the Questek nurse call system in Belfast House.

MHS has commenced a project to replace the existing Nursecall system accross the entire Port Fairy Campus at a total cost of $428,000.

The Department of Health has contributed funding of $378,000 towards the project with the remainging balance being funded by Moyne Health Services.

The project involves the removal and decommissioning of all existing Nursecall infrastructure including Nurse call points in resident/patient rooms, cabling and staff pagers and replacing it with new state of the art technology.

A small amount of cabling will be required for the new Questek system in the Acute Hospital and this is well underway. Questek was chosen in part for its ability to be able to provide a Wi-Fi based Nurse call solution which lead to an overall lower project cost and will give MHS greater flexibility in the longer term.

The project also entails the deployment of new Nurse call point hardware, wandering patient alerting devices and medical emergency call facilities. The project will also see the return of Annunicatiors in the four main Nurses’ Stations and will provide staff with an overview of active Nurse calls in their respective work areas.

A state of the art staff communication system known as Vocera has been incorporated into the project design and will revoluntionise the way staff and patients/residents interact with one another. Vocera will enable staff to engage in hands free conversations with other staff and/or the patients and residents enabling the provision of timely care and information accross the entire site.

Advanced planning for the implementation of Vocera is well underway with staff training on use of the system planned for late September.

The project is expected to be completed and fully operational by October 11th, 2013.

Further updates on the state of the project will be provided in coming weeks.
